SURVIVORS OF 1921 TULSA RACE RIOTS SALVAGE HISTORY AT NEW YORK PREMIERE OF ‘BEFORE THEY DIE’

Devastation of “Black Wall Street” in Oklahoma Is Not Forgotten

New York – Survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Riots gave voice to a little-known and shameful chapter of history before hundreds of African American leaders from business, politics and media at the New York premiere of “Before They Die,” a documentary produced by Reginald Turner, CEO of Mportant Films, and Harvard Law Professor Charles J. Ogletree, Jr.  The film is part of The Tulsa Project, a nonprofit foundation to raise awareness of the event and seek restitution for its survivors.

Otis Clark, 106, Wess Young, 93, and Dr. Olivia Hooker, 95, spoke about the 18-hour siege that destroyed 30 blocks of a thriving African-American residential and business community known as the “Black Wall Street,” leaving 300 known dead and 10,000 homeless.

Hosted by The Executive Leadership Council and The New York Times, the screening was part of a nationwide tour and fundraising effort.

“The time has come to correct the history books and seek justice for the Tulsa Race Riots survivors before they die,” said Professor Ogletree. Since 2002, he and Mr. Turner have waged a legal battle on the survivors’ behalf, leading up to an unsuccessful hearing in the Supreme Court in 2006. Professor Ogletree is a Harvard Law School Jesse Climenko Professor of Law, and Founding and Executive Director of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice.

“The film is focused on telling the story of the survivors, keeping African-American history alive and broadening awareness of it among all Americans,” said Mr. Turner, who directed the film.

“Before They Die” follows the survivors and their legal team headed by Professor Ogletree through the court system all the way to the Supreme Court and on to the U.S. Congress. It was shown at TheTimesCenter in New York.

“Showing our children the true light of history is the first step in teaching them the self-respect that will carry them to achievement and excellence,” said Carl Brooks, President and CEO of The Executive Leadership Council and The Executive Leadership Foundation. The Council provides African-American executives of Fortune 500 companies with a network and leadership forum that adds perspective and direction to the achievement of, their corporations and the community at large.

“We at The New York Times are proud that we covered this notorious event at the time and have now increased awareness of it again with this New York premiere,” said Desiree L. Dancy, Vice President, Diversity and Inclusion, The New York Times Company.

New Yorker Dr. Olivia Hooker, 95, recalled with perfect clarity being awaken from her bed by her mother and the sound of a hailstorm that was actually a rain of bullets —fired from a gun carrying an American flag. Dr. Hooker went on to make history by becoming the first African-American woman to enlist and go on active duty in the Coast Guard, then part of the U.S. Navy in World War II. She earned an M.A. from Columbia University Teachers College on the G.I. Bill, and a Ph.d at the University of Rochester where she was one of two black female students. She taught at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Fordham University and retired as Associate Professor in 1985.

The event was chaired by Jessica C. Isaacs, Senior Vice President, AIG, and Chairman, The Executive Leadership Council; and Westina Matthews Shatteen, former Managing Director, Community Business Development, Merrill Lynch Bank of America, and Board Member, The Executive Leadership Council.

The Tulsa Race Riots took place in the segregated Tulsa neighborhood of Greenwood, which was known as the “Black Wall Street” of America. It was founded by O.W. Gurley, the son of two former slaves who moved to Tulsa in July 1906 and bought 40 acres that would be sold exclusively to African Americans. Black Wall Street was a completely black-owned and black-operated community. Its initial business was a rooming house and grocery store built by Gurley in 1906. It housed many migrants fleeing the oppression in Mississippi and those in search of a better life despite the segregation mandates of the Jim Crow era.

  • Do I have proper estate planning to shield myself from unnecessary taxes?

  • Am I paying more in taxes than I need to… or have to?

Whether you’re already an entrepreneur, or just thinking about becoming one, you are invariably motivated by one of two things, or maybe even both–passion and necessity. Very often, entrepreneurs do what they do simply because they like it and want to do it. And because entrepreneurs, particularly very successful ones, rarely do anything half-way, they tend to pursue their lives and their businesses with a unique intensity. In short, they are passionate about how they live and work.
Sometimes though, entrepreneurs start a business because they have to.

Maybe it was because they were laid off from their jobs, or even worse, fired. Perhaps their company went out of business and left them out of work, or didn’t pay them enough money. In today’s economy, it’s not uncommon to see whole industries collapse when their markets dry up, as we’re seeing with real estate, construction, mortgage lending and automobiles. Many of today’s highly successful companies were started by entrepreneurs and bred from pure necessity, plain and simple.

Entrepreneurship carries with it many rewards–and many risks. It is often said that when you are self-employed, you wake up unemployed every morning. But according to Experian, one of the three biggest credit reporting agencies, self-employed entrepreneurs make about 25% more than the general population. Of course when you really consider income differential, you also need to realize that most of the wealthiest men in America made their fortunes as entrepreneurs. Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Donald Trump and Sam Walton are all self-made billionaire entrepreneurs.

But what about the risks? According to Entrepreneur Magazine somewhere between 85 and 94% % of all new business fail within the first 5 years. According to Dr. Gregory B. Murphy, associate dean and director of the MBA program for the College of Business at the University of Southern Indiana, the number of small businesses that close up shop due to severe financial distress such as bankruptcy is more on the order of 30%-40%. Regardless, this is still a huge rate of attrition.

Regardless of the risk, according to a study of entrepreneurs conducted by Master Card International, 65% of small business owners would tell a friend to start a business now, rather than wait a year. And according to MSNBC, small businesses are responsible for over 75% of the net new jobs in the economy.

These businesses often start very small–called micro businesses–and then grow rapidly. The US Census Bureau reports that 49% of the nation’s businesses are run from home, and industry analyst the Dieringer Group places the number of Americans running businesses from home at 45.1 million. Today, more so than ever, it is easy to start such a home-based business. Global search engine giant Yahoo reports that well over 75% percent of adults surveyed online indicated that the Internet directly facilitated the launch of their new business.

Based on all of this, regardless of whether you are–or want to be–an entrepreneur based on passion or necessity, you also need to consider the risk versus the reward. The potential benefits are vast and unlimited. The major risk is that you have about a 50% chance of failure. But you can get around that by doing some very basic things.

Leaders are not born. They are created. Anyone can become a leader in any area if they want to. (Read OUTLIERS by Malcom Gladwell) You need to set realistic expectations and manage them aggressively and then stick the bleep in there!

Success is almost entirely based on determination–having the discipline to hang in there even when you feel like quitting 1000 times. Most entrepreneurs fail because they simply give up too soon. Free enterprise is really about the survival of the fittest, where only the strongest survive. The formula is simple–figure out what you what and then don’t quit until you have achieved your goals. Period.

Over the last year,  I’ve spent thousands of dollars & hundreds of hours researching home/internet based businesses, personalities, experts and so-called guru’s.  Most of the material and experts were anything but excellence; however, there are companies and individuals that stand out – we’ll discuss several today!

Mike Dillard, Joe Schroeder. Ann Seig, Dale Calvert, Bob Proctor and Mark Hoverson are just a few of the individuals I studied with, and invested in … each of these individuals focused on marketing, self promotion and “SELF” branding; I believe each of them are correct in many areas; however, I’ve not been able to gather a completely tangible picture or understanding of their theories/ideas, and therein lays the rub – each of these experts asked for and received 100%  of my money and attention, while I received less than 50% of the entire solution offering from each expert. – as I purchased one series that led to another series, that promised complete and total illumination, I was given just enough to keep me coming back for more.    

I’ve come to the conclusion that these leaders and their materials provide a shadow of things that are, and things that will be in this industry; but, just I have had to do with Edision, Franklin, King, Ford, Malcolm X and many others I’ve studied, I will have to invest my own original & authentic thought, and emotional substance.

THINKING OUT LOUD, THINKING LIKE TRUMP !!!!

America is at a crossroads.
At no time in recent history has our economy been in the state that it is today.
We’re in the midst of an economic meltdown created by Wall Street greed, financial industry ineptitude, and a multi-billion dollar government bail out of the financial system that isn’t working. The American dream has been hijacked by complacency and incompetence. My experience in real estate has taught me that the greatest opportunities exist when economic times are at their worst. That’s why, after the real estate crash of the ‘90s, I came back stronger than ever. The first thing I learned is that when times are tough, you need to hedge your bets—you need to diversify.
